Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for the arts from the aunt Denise. The aunt worked as an overnight nurse so that she could have the chance to learn about art theatre or literature. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's model of the power of art as an activist vehicle. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who had a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay was born in Compton with her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father has lived for many generations. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there would later inspire her to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay began producing television news when she was just a student. She began her career working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to take a look at the junk from a home belonging to a jury member. When she was dissatisfied with journalistic work by the assignments she was handed and deciding to go after an interest in public relations. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a publicist in the young age of a studio. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. In addition to PR, the company created several lifestyle networks including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
